I serve as the Area Coordinator. this means that I am the first advisor for incoming students interested in LIS. I would like to meet with each student at least once a semester. This can be an informal meeting. In addition, my "door is usually open", and I am happy to chat with you, even more so if you are an LIS student.

This year's orientation schedule is available at this link

A very nice description of one component of our progams (Digital Libraries) can be found by clicking the link here. We also have very active programs in School Media, Knowledge Management, and Ontologies.

there is fairly clear statement of our course requirements and procedures in the SCILS Ph.D student manual.

For those who prefer a tabular layout, the information is also available here.

For higher level adminstrative issues, please contact the Director of the Program, Prof. Nicholas Belkin, shown here in a casual pose.

For some very good pointers on writing clearly, and an amusing conversation between a doctor and a patient, I refer you, somewhat surprisingly, to the US Navy Style Manual (circa 1996), available at: http://navyrotc.berkeley.edu/resources/policies/memo/5216_5d.pdf .
